Try a Different Viewpoint

posted by Jordan on 2008/7/8 (Comics)

I tried to have this done on Sunday, but ran into distractions, as usual. I really do hate having so little free time, but oh well. Money is always nice to have on the other hand. Anyway, here's a little something I put together to help clear any specific confusions anyone might have:

Some Notes on Vampires:

Vampires become stronger with age. However, this is not due to any supernatural or magical reasons, nor due to changing abilities. No, a vampire is similar to an average person, in that they must learn to use the abilities they are given. Much the same way that a human must learn to walk and speak, a vampire can't simply instantly know exactly how to assume the form of a bat, or summon a pack of wolves.

Similarly, most species must learn to walk before they can run, and vampires are similar. Once an ability is learned, it becomes the gateway to more powerful versions of the same ability. Turning into a bat will eventually lead into turning into a wolf, and possibly even into more powerful creatures given enough mastery of the ability. Such is the reason why elder vampires are the most powerful beings in existence. They have learned to tune themselves into their abilities to the point of them being nearly analogous to a human's ability to breathe.

I have some more notes as well, but I want to flesh them out a bit better. Besides, I can use these notes as an excuse to keep people tuning in. Tongue

Sneak Attack, Bitch!
Lerky - 2008/7/11
that sounds like the same as OOTS =P
Doopliss - 2008/7/11
Available, yes. Updating, no. Tongue
Face of Evil - 2008/7/11
Calm down, everybody, the OOTs comic is still available. It's just the forums that are down. At least we still have Anti-Heroes!
Ninja - 2008/7/11
it cannot be!!!! OOTS forums down? it's the OOTSPOCALYPSE i tell you!!! OOTSPOCALYPSE!!!!
dallas-dakota - 2008/7/11
OOTS forums are down?!!?? ARGH! *dies*
Valahuir - 2008/7/11
I'm gonig to agree with doopliss on this, its a simpaly a classic way for somone to get the edge on a superior fighter, OotS wasn't the first to use it, and Anti-Heroes will likly not be the last.
Doopliss - 2008/7/10
Aren't you exaggerating a bit? Only two people (four including kres and me, but we were defending the usage) suggested it was a Belkar/Miko knock-off. You say it as if it's an epidemic.
Elena (aka Lionpawheart) - 2008/7/10
BAh, guys, it's not any sort of rip off, so stop suggesting that! A rogue using sneak attack is not anyone's property, hiding in the dark certainly isn't, so knock it off!
Keep up the awsome job, Zarah!
Lyinginbedmon - 2008/7/10
Here's a thought for if/when she gets bested:

Summon bats and turn into a bat, then have all the bats go in different directions.

He'll never know which one is Lana!
Doopliss - 2008/7/10
And Lana is throwing bats at him. Tongue

It's not as if there are hardly any similarities at all. A superior fighter chases protagonist into a dark building, they exchange dialogue concerning the advantages and disadvantages of the position as the protagonist somewhat weakly snipes at the opponent, a hastily-crafted dummy is created, and the enemy is pounded from stage left.

Not that I mind, of course. I actually wasn't thinking of OotS at the time of reading, and it is a fan-comic.
HUMVEE Driver - 2008/7/10
So every time a Rogue sneak attacks someone it is a rip off of Belkar vs. Miko? How else can a Rogue sneak attack other than, oh, I don't know, OUT OF THE DARK?!? Besides, Belkar was throwing knives, not getting in close like Lana.
Face of Evil - 2008/7/10
Imagine if Lana used a spell right now. She could cast Magic Missle FROM the darkness. Wink
kres - 2008/7/9
This is a "fan" comic after all, therefore imitation knockoffs that the author of said comic finds funny are completely acceptable to be retold in a different way. Good Job!
Gael - 2008/7/9
As Haley would say,

"SNEAK ATTACK!"
Lerky - 2008/7/9
WHACK! yes! ^_^
Doopliss - 2008/7/9
I just assumed this guy would end up as a recurring antagonist...
Elena (aka Lionpawheart) - 2008/7/9
Heh, poor poor vampire hunter. Maybe she will bite him... I mean, there is gotta be some point in this side plot, right?
Memnarch - 2008/7/9
[adding to MTO]

Especially when you're in a room that echoes.
Lyinginbedmon - 2008/7/9
Go bucket!
MTONinja - 2008/7/9
I like the ' I am not just a vampire' dimension. As for the talking screwing up her chances. If you have ever been in a dark room, if the noise (voice) does not come from an easily discernible direction then it doesn't realy give you an advantage, it may actually be more disorienting.
thucom - 2008/7/9
Bit too much talking this one. Seriously, should she even get a sneak attack?
Ninja - 2008/7/9
@Star - nah it ain't a copy. you see, there is nothing on fire here, and there ain't a lead sheat....
Ecalsneerg - 2008/7/9
The OotS one had 100% less vampire in it. Gotta have me some bloodsucker.
Caelis - 2008/7/9
@star

Yes you are right, a hide and seek chase in a dark room has never ever been done before OOTS and everyone who uses it is now a total rip off.

/sarcasm off
Hermit - 2008/7/9
@Star
Star - 2008/7/9
Wow. A lousy copy of the chase of Belkar/Miko in the storageroom ... Goodbye originality..
Zurpl - 2008/7/9
Interesting concept. I completely forgot she was a rogue. But I couldn't help but realize that this scene is strangely similar to Belkar's scene with Miko. Hmm...
CarpeGuitarrem - 2008/7/8
Haha, nice! Sneak attack FTW!
Bitzeralisis - 2008/7/8
Heheheh, sneak attack.
kpenguin - 2008/7/8
Boooo. come on, vampire hunter, get that undead skank!
Phase - 2008/7/8
Yeah! go Lana!
Face of Evil - 2008/7/8
Nice one, Lana! (Though I was sort of hoping she'd bite him at the end.) Wink
SK - 2008/7/8
That's a blow to the ego. Sneak attack damage from a paint can!
Ganurath - 2008/7/8
I say, is that some character development that I detect?
Memnarch - 2008/7/8
Heh, go improvised weapons!
