Thought Process

posted by Jordan on 2008/7/5 (Comics)

The technical issues from my last update are still in place, but me and Crazed have been discussing it, and have some ideas. Although I'm not sure when we'll actually implement anything (hopefully soonish), we will be adding some things to the comments system to better it.

Pin my tail and call me a dokeyn, that really helped.

Great comic!

On the question whether Lana likes being a vampire or not: When reading her speech balloon in panel 4 I thought of "removing that undead curse" as "destroying the vampire". Like, what a vampire hunter does. So, she does not like beeing a vampire, but she likes being killed even less. So to me, her reaction made perfect sense.

And she is saying, she wouldn't believe his "bard crap" about helping her. So obviously she thinks of this as a lie to distract her.
magik - 2008/7/7
lol! Lana's expression. A combination of annoyed and "I can't believe he did that but somehow I was expecting it..."
Amaretto - 2008/7/7
yah lol.

Kaal is like a ghost Elan...
Serpentine - 2008/7/7
I would just like to say I LOVE that sequence of three panels:
"Look over there!"
...
"Nailed it."
Brilliant XD
Doopliss - 2008/7/6
Annoyed The former makes the delay seem improbable, but the latter doesn't seem to match her previous behavior. Very sorry.
Doopliss - 2008/7/6
That seems the same as Sandro's suggestion that every group needs a token good guy in this context...

I'm still not sure how to read the dialogue between Lana and the vampire hunter... Does Lana think he's offering her death, or resurrection? The former makes the delay seem rather improbable, unless he likes to look at the afterlife-prospects of his victims, but the former seems like a departure from Lana's previous outlook on being a vampire.

New theory: This dude is going to become the party bard.
Forealms - 2008/7/6
I just noticed Whatshisface is partially out of panel in the last panel, as opposed to standing next to her in the one before. That definitely has to do with something. Maybe.
Doopliss - 2008/7/6
She learned that back in comic 87, and I assume she didn't use it sooner because she's not used to it as a utility...
Elena (aka Lionpawheart) - 2008/7/6
Way to go Kaal, I'm sure that distracted him from her...
But when did she start turning into a bat, and why didn't she do it sooner?

"Doopliss, you've never played Castlevania? If you wanna destroy a vampire, you gotta use a whip."-Sylian
Eh, that one was undoubtedly enchanted. 3 Holy Whip or somesuch. I didn't see any numbers appear above Lana's head after the trip attempt... Happy

"yeah, I can see her getting about 30ft, or however far she can move in her action... I'm pretty sure an experienced vampire hunter knows how to deal with this..."-moleytov (I wonder if the new comments plans include a quote system...)
What would he do? 15-20 feet upward would put her out of whip-range, though he's unlikely to hit such a small target with a whip anyways... He might have a magic item of some kind, but he still might not want to destroy her, and it's unlikely you have to non-lethally restrain a vampire very often in his line of business... Even that's assuming he can bring it to bear and somehow stop Lana fleeing before she gets out of range (It's a city and she's tiny, so it probably won't take long to break line of sight). He also admitted he didn't think Lana could use bat-form, so he might be un-prepared... Most "magic item" attacks, (I find predominantly Reflex saves and ranged touch attacks) as well as mundane ranged ones, would also suffer significantly when trying to attack a tiny Rogue. I find in most settings you almost always see a vampire hunter getting a drop on his target or dispatching it in a more standard fight.

yeah, I can see her getting about 30ft, or however far she can move in her action... I'm pretty sure an experienced vampire hunter knows how to deal with this...

go Kaal!
Sylian - 2008/7/6
Doopliss, you've never played Castlevania? If you wanna destroy a vampire, you gotta use a whip.
dallas-dakota - 2008/7/6
The avoidence of : 30 ft. per round movement rate?
Wink
Doopliss - 2008/7/6
"Also, I wonder what other tricks the vampire hunter has. He has to have more than a whip, since that only deals nonlethal damage." That makes me wonder why he even carries it around... Undead aren't even affected at all by nonlethal damage, and grappling a vampire is generally a horrible idea... How much utility does a trip-attack have?
Crumshaw - 2008/7/6
And here I was thinking that Kaal couldn't get any cooler. I've looked back at that 10th panel 12 times now, and Kaal's goofy smile just keeps getting funnier and funnier. Great comic Zarah!

I agree with Doopliss. Lana's best bet would be to head straight to Aldran. To be honest, Lana could head virtually head anywhere and be better off than she is with Kaal.
Ganurath - 2008/7/6
Rescuing a kitty is evil?

Also, I wonder what other tricks the vampire hunter has. He has to have more than a whip, since that only deals nonlethal damage.
Face of Evil - 2008/7/6
Plus there were all the evil things he did. Wink
Hurlbut - 2008/7/6
Densharr: Correct and that Belkar carried around a lead plate against Detect Evil reinforced this fact that Belkar is evil.
Amaretto - 2008/7/6
LOL!!!

Kaal is such a moron...

Look over there! lol and right at Lana...

This comic makes up for the wait. Good Job Zarah!!!
Doopliss - 2008/7/6
Lead him right to the epic-level spellcaster?
dallas-dakota - 2008/7/6
As long as Lana doesn't fly right back to their temporary HQ, its fine. 'Cause that'l just leed the bandana guy right at them.
mockingbyrd7 - 2008/7/6
The last panel seemed to fall a bit flat, but overall this was hilarious.
"Wait, we didn't even have a plan!"
Doopliss - 2008/7/5
I was kidding...
Densharr - 2008/7/5
Actually, Doopliss, Belkar is Chaotic Evil. That's a fact, not a theory. Great comic, by the way.
Doopliss - 2008/7/5
Not sure I'm ready to call it an evil group, alignment-restrictions be damned. And Belkar is obviously Chaotic Neutral anyways. Tongue
That said, as much as I like this guy, it seems really unlikely to me that he'll join up with an undead-centric party like this one. Unless someone turns him, of course. Very happy

Xexilf: Many thanks. Judging by the nature of events surrounding that, that means Lana doesn't *want* to return to life? Really interesting, until now I thought she was just tolerating being a vampire due to a lack of alternative.
Sandro - 2008/7/5
token actually not toke Annoyed
Sandro - 2008/7/5
every evil group needs a toke good guy, its just like how belkar is part of oots.
Xexilf - 2008/7/5
To the ressurection issue someone raised, if were still talking in 3.5 edition, just raise dead dosent work on undead. ressurection/ true ressurection turn undead creatures back into living ones.
Jordan - 2008/7/5
I fixed the typos in the first panel and re-uploaded the comic. So it's all nice and fancy, I guess.
Ninja - 2008/7/5
That's it Kaal!!! You show him!!!

i sure hope this bandana guy joines the AH's....
Kyuubi - 2008/7/5
its very possibble the 'Look over there' was a clever illusion of Kaals- thus leading the hunter to chase the 'fake bat lana', and further so, leaving real Lana to escape with Kaal

...

Aaaa, who the hell am I kidding. He's a moron
Caelis - 2008/7/5
Zarah, I hate to nitpick, but I'm pretty sure in the first panel it should read "how long I've BEEN doing this" and Experienced comes with an extra e.

so. yes. I know.
dallas-dakota - 2008/7/5
Awesomity. Way to go Kaal! Heheh.
Face of Evil - 2008/7/5
Yes, very helpful, Kaal. Tongue
Doopliss - 2008/7/5
Ah, there it is. I wonder how a bard/ranger deals with something like that... He must have some sort of plan to deal with bat-form escapes...

ET: Depends on which archetypes you look at, liches and vampires in particular, dying (especiall when there's a chance of a good afterlife) can be looked at quite favourably. I would have thought he was referring to some kind of "Resurrection" spell, though, (I was never really clear on how resurrecting an undead works. All the PHB said was that undead can't be resurrected, but who knows what that means?) which makes me wonder what Lana thought he meant... She didn't really seem to take to vampirism back at the beginning...
E T - 2008/7/5
Hehe, Kaal is sure a moron. Tongue
But removing the "curse" should kill Lana - wouldn't it?
