Suitable Pun-ishment

posted by Jordan on 2009/2/3 (Comics)

Busy at the moment. I'll add some further comments later, but for now, enjoy the new comic.

EDIT: Alright, I'm back. Things are certainly heating up in today's comic, aren't they?

...Sorry.

So I was thinking last night, and I came up with a bit of an interesting idea. I love music. Specifically, soundtracks. I own soundtracks from pretty much every movie that I've enjoyed within the past 5 years. And if there's one thing I love to do with my own creative works, it's assigning the music to certain situations or characters that I've written. Nine times out of ten, this really helps me write the overall story.

Now, here's your chance to help inspire me a little. Tell me what songs you think fit in this comic. What would Lana's theme sound like to you? Or Aldran's? Or anyone's? Imagine that you've just been put in charge of coming up with the Anti-Heroes soundtrack. What would you use?

It's great to read something that's both enjoyable and provides prdgiatmsac solutions.
Eric Neiman - 2011/10/25
Me and my brother came up with soundtracks from two games we play: Mardek RPG (music found at http://www.fighunter.com/?page=music), and Mabinogi (game found at http://mabinogi.nexon.net/, download it and look in the mp3 folder). the matches we found were:

Aldran: Slash!, Mabinogi
Keriss: Dungeon 6, Mabinogi
Lana: Muriance Battle, Mardek
Kaal: Ibbie theme, Mabinogi

Eldhin: Shadow Boss, Mabinogi
Rallut: Ferghus theme, Mabinogi
Zurie: Ethna theme, Mabinogi
Quentas: Secret Boss, Mardek
Arderas: GdM theme, Mardek

Finx: Legion theme, Mardek
Laris: Saviors theme, Mardek
Veil Druid: Saul theme, Mardek

Oh, and lest I forget, I have to second Hermit's choice of theme song for Lana (Temptation Waits by Garbage).
MorkaisChosen - 2009/2/6
Funnily enough, I thought Medivh at first too- I've been playing Warcraft 3 a lot recently... I'd be slightly surprised if that was where the idea came from, thoigh.
Hermit - 2009/2/5
Bob: I don't believe so, unless Detect Magic would pick up a werewolf in a non-natural form.
Paeris Kiran - 2009/2/5
Medivh power... well at least he acts like him. But he wasn´t/ isn´t Elf.

My guess is that grand marshal of Ivory veil who would replace all legions with "magic casting something"
Bob the ninja - 2009/2/5
would detect magic pick up wild shape?
Doopliss - 2009/2/4
Bob: Come to think of it, if you feel like being rules-lawyery, Wild Shaped Druids can't actually speak. It's definitely plausible, but it still seems more likely to me that he's a Druid due to the location and his clothing.

Just some random speculation, and more based on theatrics than anything, but I get the feeling that Lana won't be able to drink that potion even if she wanted to. Likely because our smirking spellcaster takes it.
Bob the ninja - 2009/2/4
could polymorph work? he could be a wizard
Lizard Lord - 2009/2/4
Hmmm this guy doesn't fit either of the outlines for the ivory Veil in the cast page, nor is he wearing the uniform.

...

I got! He is from the Ivory Veil! Tongue

Lana's song: Smooth Criminal!

MorkaisChosen - 2009/2/4
Verdi's Dies Ira, just because it's awesome.
Peregrine - 2009/2/4
Wow, nice one again, zarah! I can see the plot is starting to pick up.
Taiyama - 2009/2/4
@ Ben Harrison: Yeah, I realize that a lot of them were longshots and some didn't fit too well (Lana's, I realize, didn't hardly fit at all) but I was just throwing a lot of them out there. Also, I'm a guy.
Doopliss - 2009/2/4
Lying: That depends on if one fire wave launched at a couple of mid-level characters could be expected to kill.
Lyinginbedmon - 2009/2/4
Strictly speaking that's not "threatening" someone, that's "attempted murder" at least.
Ben Harrison - 2009/2/4
I do the exact same thing with music. In fact I write considerably better with an appropriate tune playing away in the background; for me, good writing/roleplaying is about putting yourself where the character(s) are, and music (which has such a capacity to influence mood, etc. for most of us) is half the battle.

I was going to suggest lists of Final Fantasy music for the characters, but maybe they're too recognisable as being FF tracks and wouldn't really give the impression of belonging to anti-HEROES characters.

And I don't think I can out-do Taiyama. Some of his/her suggestions I don't think are fitting at all (Lana's is definitely not!) but the rest seem perfect. More "serious" music (Apocalyptica, et al) wouldn't seem to fit for me, the comic's never entirely serious for any length of time. Anyway, great comic!
Taiyama - 2009/2/4
Whoops, by "Felix" I meant "Finx" if that isn't obvious.

Also, you're lucky I'm a bored insomniac Tongue
Taiyama - 2009/2/4
All right, I found some soundtrack-esque music for the characters. I myself have a similar passion as yours, though it's mainly for videogame music. I'm putting up here ones that fit even a little bit in my view since I want to give you a good range of choices--heck, you might find that you like a theme I put up for one character to be used as another characters'.

Eldhin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pged9xJWgVA&feature=channel_page (could also fit Finx too), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyIvFPf0Ba4&feature=channel_page (could work for Aldran too), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeBH9vk3VYU&feature=channel_page (Man, I'm finding a lot for him, hehe).

Aldran: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLwZ9sDbDyk&feature=channel_page (this one's kind of a stretch, but I figured I'd throw it in anyway), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_2BSHbv3SY&feature=channel_page (this might be good for Keriss too), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On5-kabERmo&feature=channel_page (probably good for a sad time with him, rather than an overall theme).

Lich-Felix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VmwRETabSo&feature=channel_page (mainly for use when the group is fighting him).

Kaal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUCrb8mv2x8&feature=channel_page (kinda silly, but Kaal is a silly person).

Lana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C4yBssyoTY&feature=channel_page (not exactly fitting a vampire, I know--again, a stretch, but I wanted to throw it out there for ya).

Laris: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caRKvQAyU7M&feature=channel_page (a bit of a stretch, admittedly), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gimRrOGkkw&feature=channel_page (more fitting his pomposity than the last one).

The Fight Between Aldran and Eldhin (or any time they face off): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGwFwqHdrng&feature=related (that one fits like a glove in my opinion--darkly epic), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N2tbS9ctbQ&feature=channel_page (this one is good for any epic fight).

Keriss' guild or any other guild you deem fitting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-_D8_M03H0&feature=channel_page

The Ivory Veil itself (or the "god" of the Ivory Veil): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbdp89sSP_8&feature=channel_page, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qh4g_b9xJw&feature=channel_page

Nightwish:The Fantom of the Opera. Thats my favourite...
Taiyama - 2009/2/4
Hah, wow, you do that too in writing? I'm the same way, I always try to find theme songs for my characters. It's fun and it DOES help you write them. If I find anything that I think fits, I'll post again with youtube links.
Bob the ninja - 2009/2/4
oh. i forgot she was lower level Very happy i am used to rouges having improved evasion

“I say he looks like a Druid that has taken a VoP, or just has a el'natural streak in him considering the tattered clothes. Now is the spell from the staff (better not be a magical staff or it violates the VoP)or is it just being used as a pointing device? that is my question”

I think the staff is magical, and not just a focus for the fire spell, on the grounds that it has a shiny gem at the top. Tongue

As to the VoP idea, this universe isn't very flashy when it comes to magical equipment, so a single staff and some tattered clothing doesn't necessarily yell VoP, to me at least. See Aldran and Eldhin for the main example, both of them are epic-level but appear to have very little gear (Eldhin only has his armor, boots, sword and possibly the cape. Aldran doesn't seem to have any magical gear at all, though there is probably some that we can't see.)
Doopliss - 2009/2/3
Kres: Vow of Poverty is kind of a stretch, isn't it? His clothes look to me like animal fur and leaves, which seems generically druidic enough.

Bob the Ninja: She probably didn't make her reflex save. After all, it seems like just about everyone aside from Kaal is more powerful than Lana.
Ganurath - 2009/2/3
If the question was in regard to Team Aldran, I meant evil look good in the sense of making Evil look Good: They get along and are trying to save the world.

If it was regarding team Thralls of the Dark God, I meant they make Evil look EVIL. Can there be any doubt that Elf-Boy is a NE druid? Druid because of wild shape and nonchalant flamethrowing, NE because that's the only evil druids /can/ be.
kres - 2009/2/3
I say he looks like a Druid that has taken a VoP, or just has a el'natural streak in him considering the tattered clothes. Now is the spell from the staff (better not be a magical staff or it violates the VoP)or is it just being used as a pointing device? that is my question

Music for Lana: Garbage - Temptation Waits
Logalmier - 2009/2/3
O Fortuna of course. I find that you can't go wrong with a little sprinkle in it here or there for dramatic moments.
Bob the ninja - 2009/2/3
i thought rogues had evasion?
Lerky - 2009/2/3
this comic just got more intermeresting.
Siosilvar - 2009/2/3
“You mean, they make evil look good?”
I think he meant they make evil look effective.
zach12376 - 2009/2/3
"smek"? could have been ment as "smack". Wierd
Doopliss - 2009/2/3
So, Bard/Ranger/Dashing Swordsman?

Why didn't Lana try out her Summon Wolves? Definitely more effective than those meager two bats she keeps using.

I don't think he just wants to kill her because she's unnatural. For one thing, he was listening in, so he knew quaffing the bottle was a less violent alternative. Despite this, he asked for Lana instead of the bottle. And then of course you have that annoying smirk.

Ganurath: You mean, they make evil look good?
Brett - 2009/2/3
WOW :0 that was truly inovative at the end!
I don't think i've ever seen a "smek" sound before.

dragongirl13 - 2009/2/3
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The crow WAS a Shapechanged person! Oh my gosh that is too funny!
Hermit - 2009/2/3
So that's who Aldran was trying to fry...
Ganurath - 2009/2/3
Bookworm: No, that guy's cloak isn't fuzzy like Elf-Boy. Plus, he's missing the shoulder bulge from the plaudrons/scarf/whatever.
The Bookworm - 2009/2/3
I think he could be the Tyldarian leader who's standing between Eldhin and Zurie on the cast page...
Toil3T - 2009/2/3
He's probably just a druid looking to kill a vampire because they're unnatural. The ensuing fight will be used for developing the story.
Ganurath - 2009/2/3
Evil druid! They're toast!

So, I guess that while Team Aldran makes evil look good and Team Ehldin makes good look evil, Elf-Boy is with the team Aldran's plan is trying to thwart: They who make evil look evil.
Blakjak - 2009/2/3
Whoever this character is he is definetly not from Tydaris. The wizard guy from that place was suppose to have a crown or something.
Face of Evil - 2009/2/3
"I was the turkey all along!"

He doesn't look like he's from Tydaris, however. Not enough white, and there's not a stick jutting out from his ass. Tongue
-skimmer- - 2009/2/3
FirsT!

Good comix as ever!
Lydronk - 2009/2/3
Heheh! Very happy Nice, but... Who is this guy? I suppose he is here to spoil Aldran's plans!
