...Here He Comes

posted by Jordan on 2008/8/15 (Comics)

Whew. I wanted to make up for not updating Tuesday with a double issue today, and actually managed to finish it before bed.

I also wanted to get it finished before this weekend, since I may be building a new computer this weekend, which would obvious prevent me from making a regular update while I transfer everything from one computer to the other, and make sure all my comic-work is backed up and in-tact. So again, if I suddenly disappear this weekend, you'll know why. But I'll be reappearing on a brand new system shortly thereafter. Of course, this all depends on whether or not my motherboard arrives tomorrow night. If not, then I guess I'm stuck waiting until next week.

Stupid mail.

All this arguing, and eople forget the *most important* question:

How did Aldran manage to Bluff Lana? It's pretty established that his Bluff is lousy (Quote Keriss: "Put some points in Bluff already"), and Lana should have Sense Motive as a class skill, or, at least, had it for several levels.
mockingbyrd7 - 2008/8/30
I think it's pretty obvious that he and Eldhin have wings. Eldhin took off his cloak and then jumped from a balcony with a big "WHOOSH!" and in the last panel, Finx was speaking UP to him. Aldran ripped off his sleeves (stick figures, remember) and went "WHOOSH!" and Lana is speaking up to him.
I think the only way it could be more obvious would be if one of the characters shouted "WOO! I'M FLYING!" or if it actually SHOWED them flying.
nidhogg - 2008/8/29
then even after 30years she doesnt control all her vampire powers?

no i doubt finx counts as a exersice for this matter
whatever the exersise is
Doopliss - 2008/8/29
That would mean Finx took 30 years to arrive at Northhaven, "The nearest city", wouldn't it?
Amaretto - 2008/8/29
Ye, that is entirly plausible. Why not 30 years? If they aren't human completeley, also plausible, then it could seem like a little while.

Anyways, you have no evidence showing that it hasn't been 30 years.

XD
nidhogg - 2008/8/29
yhea, every1 should just wait 'till the next strip
whenever that may be. . . :'(
dallas-dakota - 2008/8/28
30 years since he fought his brother?
Amaretto - 2008/8/28
That's what I think too.
However, the urge to debate is too strong. ;D

CLRTR, in your comment you said that he is flying although you can make no such assumtion and state it as a fact.

What you should of said in that case is:
"Alright, its been a while but let's see if I remember how to do this. Thirty-odd years without exercise can't be too bad for you, right?"
And there is a "Whoosh" sound.

You can't make the assumption that the whoosh is Aldran or that it is even flight.
If you read my past commenst I have put forth 3 possible explanations for the whoosh. I don not feel like restating them, just read the whole post over again.

>Worried
dragongirl13 - 2008/8/27
Wow, this strip really has a truckload of comments, doesn't it? And most of them are by the same group of people! I think we should all just wait for the next strip.
cookie - 2008/8/27
CLRTR is right. Aldran's talking about being able to do whatever he just did (which I hope is flying, cos seriously, wow!) rather than being able to knock three bells out of his meany brother. Which I hope he does. With bells on! Eldhin's going down... although maybe not, cos I dont write this... wish I did, it's so awesome!
CLRTR - 2008/8/27
"Alright, it's been a while but let's see if I remember how to do this. Thirty-odd years without any exercise can't be too bad for you, right?".
And he flies away.

And yet for some reason people think that he talks about remembering how to fight a bunch of people, rather than flying...
Amaretto - 2008/8/27
@Valahuir

How was that ur point? If it was what u were thinking, it sure wasn't what u wrote... read what u wrote again if u dont remember!

Sorry Im just grouchy that there hasn't been any new comics...
dallas-dakota - 2008/8/27
The Giant in the Playground forums have been switched off for an upgrade. We apologise for the inconvenience and hope to be back in a few hours.

Gah.
Valahuir - 2008/8/26
That was kind of my point, Finx alone seemed eaisy, but that lot arn't going to be a simple fight.

Thus the 'Exersice' could well be the epic engagment with Finx, Eldhin and co.
Amaretto - 2008/8/26
What if he was preparing for a fight with that huge group of people Finx brought together Eldin?

That would hardly qualify as easy.... although it could be manageable depending on the level of the good party and the dwarves.
Valahuir - 2008/8/25
True but the Fight with finx hardly qualifies as suficcent exersice, he cast 4 or 5 spells then threw him overboard,
that and I think Aldran is probably quite a few levels higher than him making it relativly easy fight, although their isn't much evedence to suport that theroy yet.
Doopliss - 2008/8/25
I was joking about the "wings" thing....

I don't know about "just", (Though I imagined three days or so passed) but it was definitely sooner than "thirty-odd years".
Amaretto - 2008/8/25
Um..... what?

Aldran has just fought Finx? Not really..... He fought Finx on the ship and that could of been a really long time ago.... more than "just".

And for ur previous post: Zarah never said that they have "wings"! Read it carefully! He said that he would be clearing up the debate over whether or not thee are win gs in the next comic.

That wasn't flaming was it? Anyways, I must correct ppl when they make a wrong assumption which they can't make based on insufficient evidence....

XD
Doopliss - 2008/8/24
*sorry for the double-post*
Since Aldran just fought Finx, I would assume he's had at least some excercise if that's what he was referring to.
Doopliss - 2008/8/24
*Gasp* Jordan said "wings"! I knew it! Tongue
Valahuir - 2008/8/24
Austran was correct, I was refering to the Book of Exalted Deeds, However as Has now been stated, we will find out next issue Happy
Amaretto - 2008/8/24
No, the fact that he mentions "exercise" is refferig to him taking on a tough enemy, maybe Finx or Eldin.
Jordan - 2008/8/23
As I posted on the Giantitp forums:

Alright, I'm back. I expected to be later today, but I had enough time to get online, so here I am. I honestly don't know when my next update will be, since I've got to work the next couple of days, and then I have to pack up and move back to the university. There's a lot of drawing to be done too, but I'll shoot for as soon as I can.

Oh, and yes, the next issue will be clearing up this whole Aldran/Eldhin wings mess. Tongue
CLRTR - 2008/8/23
The fact that he mentions "exercise" seems to support the theory about wings, rather than a spell of some sort.
Amaretto - 2008/8/23
Yay! Your are xactly right Valahuir! Just like I've been sayign all along, the ripping of the sleeves is for dramatic tension!

XD Bingo!
Austran - 2008/8/23
BoED? Book of Exalted Deeds, perhaps.
dallas-dakota - 2008/8/23
Valahuir, wanna bet that Zarah hasn't red the BoED, its obscure enough that I don't know what it means.
Valahuir - 2008/8/23
Well it's possable their both human, used respective spells from their lists to gain flight, in the BoED the paladins gain a angel wings one, and the disposal of the sleaves and cloak was simpaly to increase dramatic tention.

But if they are part celestial, the armor could theseably have been modifyed to allow the wings a place to emerge.
dallas-dakota - 2008/8/22
Most likely, that's why I have kept myself out of it.
Amaretto - 2008/8/22
Meh, w/e. This topic has been done to death now. 51 posts on it. wow.....

So I'll just wait till the next comic where we actually find out the answer instead of both sides repeating the same arguments again and again.

Happy
nidhogg - 2008/8/22
mister paladin wears platearmour over his shoulderblades and he only removed his cape
so i doubt there will be any angel wings
Landon Fox - 2008/8/21
And I bet he's part angel. I bet both of them are.
Landon Fox - 2008/8/21
Actually, the shoulder blades are pretty close to the shoulders. Imagine that. And the sleeves he ripped off go to the shoulders. And robes aren't exactly skin-tight. So it's quite feasible that ripping off his sleeves would give enough of an opening for his wings to emerge.
Riveth - 2008/8/21
Amaretto: Maybe you forgot the o. Wink
Doopliss - 2008/8/21
I would assume you forgot the "o". Tongue
Amaretto - 2008/8/21
Eh. why did "count" get blocked out in last message?
Amaretto - 2008/8/21
Gael has a point.

BUT! I ahve a ****er-point! XD

-Aldran looks like he is getting ready for some big battle. Say his arms turned into wings (which is quite rare in DnD) he would be unable to protect himself from any enemies (whom he seems to be expecting by his muttering and battle stance and not wanting Lana to come with him.)

So would he make himself totally defenseless so that he could move faster? I do not believe Aldran's character would ever like himself to be defenseless. Admittedly, he is a mage, and thus does not need to hold a weapon. BUT he does need to make a sybol of power with his hands to release the magic (how me group played DnD anyways).

Also, wings on the shulder-blades was not invented by DnD! All angels have always had them on the shoulder blades for all time!!!!!

I still stand by my rather unlikely theory that a Paladin really came (Aldran told Lana the truth) but snuck up to Aldan and.......

Here's where it gets fuzzy: Maybe carried him off?
Troll - 2008/8/21
No, Aldran clearly polymorphed into a "woosh" sound-effect. Everything else is just silly.
dragongirl13 - 2008/8/20
It could be the Fire Wings spell. It makes your arms turn into wings made of fire. You can fly, and you can attack.
Gael - 2008/8/20
Wings on the shoulders of a humanoid was basically made by DnD so that characters could still use their magical weapons XD

In nature nothing has arms and wings. Arms turning into wings makes much more sense. But this is DnD....
Austran - 2008/8/20
Perhaps... his arms turned into wings?
Amaretto - 2008/8/20
Srry for double post. Btw, you'd think Jordan could at least tell us whether Aldran was flyign or not as he managed to post something.... >=P
Amaretto - 2008/8/20
WHY IS EVERYONE SAYING THAT ALDRAN IS FLYING!

Wings grow from your shoulder blades people! Aldran clearly ripped off his sleeves, which do not actually open a passage for wings to sprout from. >=O

I attribted Lana's looking up at 2nd laat strip as looking to where Aldran has gone off to (searching for him.)The "WHOOSH" is harder to explain (as it implies that something left the ground, but I ahve thought of many explanations.

1. A Paladin actually followed Lana =O (maybe Eldin?) and was the whoosh that she heard.

2. The whoosh could be Aldran driving away on a vehicle.

3. Aldran has some fancy spell that lets him jump very high. XD

As already mentioned by Thor, ripping off your sleeves could mean that he is preparing for some big battle. (cmon, you must of seen that in some movies).

@Daran: She can't follow him because she clearly cant see him any more. (Aldran left before she noticed his dissapearence and if he was within sight, she would of yelled out to him to wait or something). Even if she was fast enough to catc up, doubtful, maybe Aldran went someplace else first before going to the ship and if he went to the ship without seeing Aldran, she coulkd hardly be following him....)

Phew, long post. XD
Very happy
Doopliss - 2008/8/20
Bats probably fly significantly slower than winged humanoids, and she doesn't seem to have learned Dire Bat yet. Maybe now's her chance?
Daran - 2008/8/20
Well - she is a Vampire after all. Can't she follow him by turning into a bat again?
Doopliss - 2008/8/20
...Also notice that Lana is looking upwards at the end of the strip.
Doopliss - 2008/8/20
What about the "Whoosh"? And the muttering?
Thor - 2008/8/19
All he did was rip the sleeves off his robe. Like he was needing to get ready for a big battle and needed to not be slowed down by big sleeves.
Jordan - 2008/8/19
Alright, so I have some apologizing to do. I'd hate to leave everyone hanging on such a moment as this, but a funeral came up in the far off land of Saskatchewan, so I've got to be off. In fact, we're leaving tonight and shan't be returning until the following Sunday. I don't know when I'll have my next update, but hopefully it won't be too long.

So see everyone on Sunday...
Amaretto - 2008/8/19
As Belkar oncce said.

"Sniff, I love you guys."

XD
dallas-dakota - 2008/8/18

Arhagellos - 2008/8/18
First post on these, just like to say how insanely fun this comic has been, eagerly waiting for the next update.

Amaretto, don't know you but you sure remind me of this chick I know that went mental on me for no reason Tongue
TheHermit - 2008/8/17
Nope Ian, it was posted the 15th.
Ian - 2008/8/17
Love the whole group of Anti-Heroes. Can't wait to see how this goes.

So are there more comics coming or is the date on the Author's comments WAY off? When was this comic posted?
Darke - 2008/8/17
Hey, awesome comic!

Zarah should put Eldarin(?) up on the character thingy.
Valahuir - 2008/8/16
Hello Amaretto, quit moaning now. Tongue

Dooplis, that could be why they are heavy monk type robes, that and folding them as best as they are able too.

Although the lying on his back in the hammock seems like it would be uncomfatable if he doe's have wings...
Face of Evil - 2008/8/16
Geez, Amaretto, don't be a drama queen. Tongue
Amaretto - 2008/8/16
And still sad......

Do you people even read the below posts or are just too mean and uncaring to say hello to a fellow poster who was on vacation in France for a long long long week without anti-HEROES.

Sad
>Worried
dragongirl13 - 2008/8/16
Hmm, does Aldran know the Fire Wings spell? I can't wait to see what this is all about.
Amaretto - 2008/8/16
till sad......

Sad
Valahuir - 2008/8/15
Suddenly Aldran put ranks into Bluff, or Lana mush have an AWFUL sence motive, although as a rogue that isn't likly....
Woodrot - 2008/8/15
Huh, I just assumed Aldran ripped his sleeves to look cool. But then again, wings would be even cooler.
TheHermit - 2008/8/15
Actually, It would make sense if Aldran were (at least) half-fiend. Think of Keriss. They might have more in common than we think...
cookie - 2008/8/15
more flyings! oh my god! cannot wait to read the next one. and the next one. and the next one... you get it, I want more!
Face of Evil - 2008/8/15
Maybe they don't have wings. Maybe they're from Krypton.
Ganurath - 2008/8/15
Or perhaps it's the reverse: Eldhin is a cleric who fights the good fight to make up for his fiendish blood, and Aldran is a Well Intentioned Extremist.
Austran - 2008/8/15
So... apparently Eldhin did not cast Wind Walk, after all. I would say that they are half-brothers, Aldran being half-abyssal, and Eldhin half-celestial.
Lira - 2008/8/15
OMG. That was really cool. Tongue Thanks for the big comic, Zarah.
Doopliss - 2008/8/15
He has... Wings? How can that sort of thing be concealed by a robe?
MTONinja - 2008/8/15
erm.. action, as in combat.

That sounded mighty strange coming after a declaration of love. Happy
MTONinja - 2008/8/15
mwHAHAHA. I love Aldran, I can't wait to see him in action. Great comic.
Amaretto - 2008/8/15
On a side note, how ome only FoE has siad hi?

Sad I am sad once more...
Amaretto - 2008/8/15
Heh, heh.

Reference to OOTS riding dog...

Just a question: ince wings generally are found coming out of your shoulder blades, how does ripping off your sleeves let them come out? this I didn't quite understand unless his arms turn into wings, which would be strange indeed. o.0

Aw well, spose u get to do that stuff with artistic license...
Face of Evil - 2008/8/15
... here comes Speed Racer! Tongue
Face of Evil - 2008/8/15
Maybe Aldran and Eldhin are both bird-people!

Who live in the branches of Epileptic Trees!

Nice update, Zarah.
magik - 2008/8/15
so...Aldran can fly? Figures... he can stop time. I wonder what his "deal" is. Heh...so many questions it's good to have this on the cliffhanger side again!
TheHermit - 2008/8/15
Whoops, never mind. I thought he was ripping his arms off... :-/

(Sorry for the double-post...)
TheHermit - 2008/8/15
Rip? Ow, Aldran, what ability is THAT? If anyone knows what in the world he did, please enlighten me.
