Operation: Birthday Cake

posted by Jordan on 2008/8/10 (Comics)

Once again, Finx takes the award for best expression in that third last panel. Red pupils are fun to work with.

And this update is not late. Somewhere in the world, it is still Saturday. So, take that... world.

Double-posterrific!

I just noticed that this comic is the first comic where Eldhin is looking directly at someone BUT is not confused/angry/annoyed at them. Congrats, Eldhin!

I love the title.

Also: Kick his ass, Finx!

@Knight13: I came to similar conclusions a couple of strips ago. Also, consider that he might be acting within the rules and regulations of his order and/or faith rather than simply the law in general. St. Cuthbert clerics are well-known for enforcing church laws, even when they conflict with the laws of local lords. If anything, Eldhin reminds me of a slightly radical Warhammer 40k Inquisitor (i.e., one whose faith in the Immortal God-Emperor is unshakable, but uses some of the tools of the Ruinous Powers of Chaos to get his job done).

Also, note that Eldhin also cast Disrupting Weapon. That's another spell that Paladin's don't get, but clerics do.

I'm more inclined to think that he's simply a straight Cleric. Going by core-only, it's very concievable that he got proficiency with the longsword via MWP or the War domain. It's not like there's really many feats very useful to a Cleric in core outside of Improved Initiative, Power Attack, and metamagic feats. He also needs to be able to provide a decent challenge to not only Finx, but his brother as well. Only a pure Cleric (or Druid) and the raw divine power that comes with it has a chance of doing that without resorting to arcane spellcasting.

Impeding someone who's just doing their job isn't necessarily chaotic, (I mean, that brings up a lot of questions in regards to war) and he obviously felt a need to be quick.

Well, try not to read too deep...
FrankNorman - 2008/8/10
How does a lich manage to have facial expressions anyway? The shape of the eye sockets changes?
Zend - 2008/8/10
Hehehe, surpise party. I love the comic. It's in my favorites. Very happy

If the capt is an illusion that would be Kaal's best, and Finx being a specialist in that school of magic gets all kinds of bonuses to see them. Kinda of a stretch but is possible. Kaal would win on this type of disguise.

Just discovered your comic and thought I would share my sadness with all. Thats right; I've read them all and now have to wait for updates.
Knight13 - 2008/8/10
Well, Eldhin did paralyze a gate guard just for doing his job. That's a chaotic act and could be considered an evil one too.

Also, Hold Person isn't a paladin spell, so Eldhin might not be a paladin at all, more like a fighter/cleric.
Memnarch - 2008/8/10
More like forcing a lich to do stuff for them.

It's a stretch, but could that be Kaal?
Serpentine - 2008/8/10
...though they are consorting with liches. I can see that being a fallable offense.
Serpentine - 2008/8/10
What have they done that's Evil? They're not exactly nice or likable, but I don't remember that being in the alignment description...
Ganurath - 2008/8/10
How the boop have these paladins not fallen? Are they Paladins of Kor or something?
Face of Evil - 2008/8/10
Holy shit. Is that a confused expression on Finx's skull in the fifth and sixth panels? I don't think I've ever seen that on Xykon.

Anti-Heroes is blazing trails in the field of lich facial expressions, I tell you. BLAZING TRAILS. Wink

Nice comic, Zarah.
Doof - 2008/8/10
I like the captains shiny hair

"They must be planning a surprise party for us! Quick, oh great and masterful strategist, how do we counter a move as devious as that?"
